PURPOSE: To explore a novel biopsy scheme for prostate cancer (PCa), and test the detection rate and pathological agreement of standard systematic (SB) + targeted (TB) biopsy and novel biopsy scheme. METHODS: Positive needles were collected from 194 patients who underwent SB + TB (STB) followed by radical prostatectomy (RP). Our novel biopsy scheme, targeted and regional systematic biopsy (TrSB) was defined as TB + regional SB (4 SB-needles closest to the TB-needles). The McNemar test was utilized to compare the detection rate performance for clinical significant PCa (csPCa) and clinical insignificant PCa (ciPCa). Moreover, the accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were investigated. The agreement between the different biopsy schemes grade group (GG) and RP GG were assessed. The concordance between the biopsy and the RP GG was evaluated using weighted κ coefficient analyses. RESULTS: In this study, the overall detection rate for csPCa was 83.5% (162 of 194) when SB and TB were combined. TrSB showed better NPV than TB (97.0% vs. 74.4%). Comparing to STB, the TB-detection rate of csPCa had a significant difference (p < 0.01), while TrSB showed no significant difference (p > 0.999). For ciPCa, the overall detection rate was 16.5% (32 of 194). TrSB showed better PPV (96.6% vs. 83.3%) and NPV (97.6% vs. 92.9%) than TB. Comparing to STB, the detection rate of both schemes showed no significant difference (p = 0.077 and p = 0.375). All three schemes GG showed poor agreement with RP GG (TB: 43.3%, TrSB: 46.4%, STB: 45.9%). Using weighted κ, all three schemes showed no difference (TB: 0.48, TrSB: 0.51, STB: 0.51). In our subgroup analysis (PI-RADS = 4/5, n = 154), all three schemes almost showed no difference (Weighted κ: TB-0.50, TrSB-0.51, STB-0.50). CONCLUSION: Our novel biopsy scheme TrSB (TB + 4 closest SB needles) may reduce 8 cores of biopsy compared with STB (standard SB + TB), which also showed better csPCa detection rate than TB only, but the same as STB. The pathological agreement between three different biopsy schemes (TB/TrSB/STB) GG and RP GG showed no difference.

Vacancies, as well as their derivatives, usually play a crucial role in many essential properties of materials. However, they always behave erratically, especially under universal thermal vibration, and are therefore difficult to accurately locate. Until now, the lack of an accurate and flexible method for locating and identifying vacancies has hampered the development of relative fields. In this paper, we present a new method to solve this problem. The strategy is to target the atomic cage enwrapping vacancies instead of the vacancies themselves. The core of the method is a time-averaged atomic volume spectrum (TAVS). The key to this method is to identify atoms using time-averaged rather than transient atomic volume, thereby simultaneously denoising intrinsic thermal vibration and avoiding vacancy migration jump. Using this method, we have succeeded for the first time in obtaining the panoramic maps of spontaneously trapped defects in quenched and annealed face-centered cubic aluminum and even the instantaneous images of a steady trapping process. All characteristics of each trapped vacancy, including location, dimension, volume and morphology, as well as aggregate statistical data such as vacancy amount and concentration, can be completely and accurately obtained. Furthermore, these first maps of defects (vacancies) revealed some surprising and interesting phenomena for future exploration. In conclusion, this method provides not only a means of locating and catching vacancies, but also a strategy for identifying and characterizing vacancies. On the basis of its successful application in FCC Al, the TAVS method can be easily extended to other systems as well.

Diets with high carbohydrate (HC) was reported to have influence on appetite and intermediary metabolism in fish. To illustrate whether betaine could improve appetite and glucose-lipid metabolism in aquatic animals, mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) were fed with the HC diets with or without betaine for 8 weeks. The results suggested that betaine enhanced feed intake by regulating the hypothalamic appetite genes. The HC diet-induced downregulation of AMPK and appetite genes was also positively correlated with the decreased autophagy genes, suggesting a possible mechanism that AMPK/mTOR signaling might regulate appetite through autophagy. The HC diet remarkably elevated transcriptional levels of genes related to lipogenesis, while betaine alleviated the HC-induced hepatic lipid deposition. Additionally, betaine supplementation tended to store the energy storage as hepatic glycogen. Our findings proposed the possible mechanism for appetite regulation through autophagy via AMPK/mTOR, and demonstrated the feasibility of betaine as an aquafeed additive to regulate appetite and intermediary metabolism in fish.

Background: Refractive errors, particularly myopia, are the leading visual disorders worldwide, significantly affecting the quality of life (QOL) even after correction. This scoping review focuses on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measurements for children and adolescents with refractive errors. Main text: We explored generic and disease-specific HRQOL tools, examining their content, psychometric properties, and the impact of various interventions on QOL. Two English databases-PubMed, Embase, and one Chinese database, CNKI, were searched for relevant studies published from January 2001 to October 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies using standardized instruments to assess the QOL of children aged 0-18 with refractive errors. The review compares prevalent HRQOL measurements, analyzes children's refractive error assessments, and discusses intervention effects on patient QOL. Conclusions: The study underlines the necessity of developing disease-specific QOL instruments for very young children and serves as a practical guide for researchers in this field. The findings advocate for a targeted approach in HRQOL assessment among the pediatric population, identifying critical gaps in current methodologies.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder with no effective interventions for curing or modifying its progression. However, emerging research suggests that vitamin A in the diet may play a role in both the prevention and treatment of AD, although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the dietary vitamin A modifies the gut microbiota and intestinal tissue transcriptome, impacting intestinal permeability and the release of inflammatory factors, thereby influencing Aß pathology shedding light on its potential as a dietary intervention for AD prevention and treatment. Methods: The APP/PS1-AD mouse model was employed and divided into three dietary groups: vitamin A-deficient (VAD), normal vitamin A (VAN), and vitamin A-supplemented (VAS) for a 12-week study. Neurobehavioral functions were assessed using the Morris Water Maze Test (MWM). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify levels of Diamine Oxidase (DAO), D-lactate, IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-a cytokines. Serum vitamin A levels were analyzed via LC-MS/MS analysis. Immunohistochemical analysis and morphometry were performed to evaluate the deposition of Aß in brain tissue. The gut microbiota of APP/PS1 mice was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis was conducted on intestinal tissue from APP/PS1 mice. Results: No significant changes in food intake and body weight were observed among the groups. However, the VAD and VAS groups showed reduced food intake compared to the VAN group at various time points. In terms of cognitive function, the VAN group performed better in the Morris Water Maze Test, indicating superior learning and memory abilities. The VAD and VAS groups exhibited impaired performance, with the VAS group performing relatively better than the VAD group. Serum vitamin A concentrations differed significantly among the groups, with the VAS group having the highest concentration. Aß levels were significantly higher in the VAD group compared to both the VAN and VAS groups. Microbial analysis revealed that the VAS and VAN groups had higher microbial diversity than the VAD group, with specific taxa characterizing each group. The VAN group was characterized by taxa such as Actinohacteriota and Desulfovibrionaceae, while the VAD group was characterized by Parabacteroides and Tannerellaceae. The VAS group showed similarities with both VAN and VAD groups, with taxa like Desulfobacterota and Desulfovibrionaceae being present. The VAD vs. VAS, VAD vs. VAN, and VAS vs. VAN comparisons identified 571, 313, and 243 differentially expressed genes, respectively, which associated with cellular and metabolic processes, and pathway analysis revealed enrichment in pathways related to chemical carcinogenesis, drug metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and immune-related processes. The VAD group exhibited higher levels of D-lactate, diamine oxidase, and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6) compared to the VAN and VAS groups. Conclusion: Dietary vitamin A supplementation modulates the gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, inflammatory factors, and Aß protein formation, offering insights into the pathogenesis of AD and potential therapeutic avenues for further exploration. This research highlights the intricate interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and neurodegenerative processes, emphasizing the importance of dietary interventions in managing AD-related pathologies.

This work aims to enhance the adsorption performance of Laponite @diatomite for organic pollutants by modifying it with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The microstructure and morphology of the CTAB-modified Laponite @diatomite material were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and TG. Furthermore, the influences of key parameters, containing pH, adsorbent dosage, reaction time, and reaction temperature, on the adsorption process were investigated. The kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm models of the adsorption process were analyzed. Finally, potential adsorption mechanisms were given based on the characterization. The research findings indicate that CTAB-La@D exhibits good adsorption performance toward Congo red (CR) over a broad pH range. The maximum adsorption capacity of CR was 451.1 mg/g under the optimum conditions (dosage = 10 mg, contact time = 240 min, initial CR concentration = 100 mg/L, temperature = 25 °C, and pH = 7). The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherms indicated that the adsorption process of CR was more in line with the Langmuir model, and it was physical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis illustrates that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Additionally, the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption and hydrophobic effect adsorption of CR were investigated through XPS and FTIR analysis. This work provides an effective pathway for designing high-performance adsorbents for the removal of organic dye, and the synthesized materials hold great capability for practical utilization in the treatment of wastewater.

Pentagonal palladium diselenide (PdSe2) stands out for its exceptional optoelectronic properties, including high carrier mobility, tunable bandgap, and anisotropic electronic and optical responses. Herein, we systematically investigate photocarrier dynamics in PdSe2 ribbons using polarization-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. In thin PdSe2 ribbons with a semiconductor phase, the photocarrier dynamics are found to be dominated by intraband hot-carrier cooling, interband recombination, and the exciton effect, showing weak crystalline orientation dependences. Conversely, in thick semimetal-phase PdSe2 ribbons, the photocarrier relaxations governed by the electron-optical/acoustic phonon scattering strongly depend on the sample orientation, albeit with a degradation in in-plane anisotropy following hot-carrier cooling. Furthermore, we analyze the correlations between photocarrier dynamics and anisotropic energy dispersions of electronic structures across a wide range in k space, as well as the contributions from the anisotropic electron-phonon couplings. Our study provides crucial insights for developing polarization-sensitive photoelectronic devices based on PdSe2.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between long-term exposure to occupational noise and hearing loss has been extensively documented. We aimed to assess spatial and temporal changes in the burden of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) in 204 countries and territories with varying socio-demographic indexes (SDI) from 1990 to 2019. DESIGN: Temporal and spatial trends in age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rates (ASDR) for ONIHL were estimated by sex, age, SDI level, country, and geographic region from 1990 to 2019. We used the Joinpoint model to calculate annual average percentage changes to assess such trends and projected trends in ASDR for ONIHL globally and across different income regions from 2020 to 2044 using an age-period-cohort model. We fitted the relationship between ASDR and SDI, ASDR and healthcare access and quality index, respectively. RESULTS: Overall, the global burden of ONIHL has decreased since 1990, especially in middle and lower SDI regions. In 2019, the global ASDR for ONIHL was 84.23 (95% confidence interval: 57.46 to 120.52) per 100,000 population. From 1990 to 2019, the global ASDR for ONIHL decreased by 1.72% (annual average percentage change = -0.05, 95% confidence interval: -0.07 to -0.03). Our projections showed a decreasing trend in the global ONIHL burden until 2044. ASDR and SDI (R = -0.8, p < 0.05), ASDR and healthcare access and quality index (R = -0.75, p < 0.05) showed significant negative correlations. CONCLUSIONS: The global ONIHL burden has decreased over the past three decades, especially in regions with middle and lower SDI levels. However, the global ONIHL burden still remained severe in 2019, notably among males, the middle-aged and elderly, and regions with lower SDI levels.

Despite that surgical resection is widely regarded as the most effective approach to the treatment of liver cancer, its safety and efficacy upon centrally located hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unsatisfactory. In consequence, seeking an integrated treatment, like combined with adjuvant radiotherapy, to enhance the prognosis of patients is of critical importance. By recruiting patients undergoing surgical resection for centrally located HCC ranging from June 2015 to 2020, they were divided into liver resection combined with adjuvant radiotherapy (LR + RT) and mere liver resection (LR) groups. The calculation of propensity score and model of Cox proportional hazards regression were utilized. 193 patients were recruited in aggregation, containing 88 ones undergoing LR + RT, while 105 handled with LR. RT was verified to be an independent factor of prognosis for relapse (HR 0.60). In propensity-score analyses, significant association existed between adjuvant radiotherapy and better disease-free survival (DFS) (Matched, HR 0.60; Adjustment of propensity score, HR 0.60; Inverse probability weighting, HR 0.63). The difference of DFS was apparent within two groups (p value = 0.022), and RT significantly down-regulated early relapse (p value < 0.05) in subgroup analysis. The calculation of E-value revealed robustness of unmeasured confounding. The combination of liver surgical resection with RT is safe and effective towards patients with centrally located HCC, which would notably enhance the prognosis and decrease the early relapse of HCC.

Necroptosis is a form of inflammatory lytic cell death involving active cytokine production and plasma membrane rupture. Progression of necroptosis is tightly regulated in time and space, and its signaling outcomes can shape the local inflammatory environment of cells and tissues. Pharmacological induction of necroptosis is well established, but the diffusive nature of chemical death inducers makes it challenging to study cell-cell communication precisely during necroptosis. Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3, or RIPK3, is a crucial signaling component of necroptosis, acting as a crucial signaling node for both canonical and non-canonical necroptosis. RIPK3 oligomerization is crucial to the formation of the necrosome, which regulates plasma membrane rupture and cytokine production. Commonly used necroptosis inducers can activate multiple downstream signaling pathways, confounding the signaling outcomes of RIPK3-mediated necroptosis. Opsin-free optogenetic techniques may provide an alternative strategy to address this issue. Optogenetics uses light-sensitive protein-protein interaction to modulate cell signaling. Compared to chemical-based approaches, optogenetic strategies allow for spatiotemporal modulation of signal transduction in live cells and animals. We developed an optogenetic system that allows for ligand-free optical control of RIPK3 oligomerization and necroptosis. This article describes the sample preparation, experimental setup, and optimization required to achieve robust optogenetic induction of RIPK3-mediated necroptosis in colorectal HT-29 cells. Cervi Cornu is the ossified antler, or the base antler that falls off in the spring of the following year after the pilose antler is sawn off from Cervus elaphus or C. nippon, as a precious traditional Chinese medicine, has been recognized for its medicinal value and widely used in clinical practice. However, the origins of Cervi Cornu are miscellaneous, and Cervi Cornu is even mixed with adulterants in the market. Currently, there is a shortage of ways to identify Cervi Cornu and no standard to control the quality of Cervi Cornu. So it is valuable to develop a way to effectively identify Cervi Cornu from the adulterants. In this study, the differences in the mitochondrial barcode cytochrome b(Cytb) gene sequences of C. elaphus, C. nippon and their related species were compared and the specific single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) sites on the Cytb sequences of Cervi Cornu were screened out. According to the screened SNPs, Cervi Cornu-specific primers dishmy-F and dishmy-R were designed. The PCR system was established and optimized, and the tolerance and feasibility of Taq polymerases and PCR systems affecting the repeatability of the PCR method were investigated. The amplification products of C. elaphus and C. nippon were digested using the restriction enzyme MseⅠ. The results showed that after electrophoresis of the product from PCR with the annealing temperature of 56 ℃ and 35 cycles, a single specific band at about 100 bp was observed for C. elaphus samples, and the product of C. elaphus samples was 60 bp shorter than that of C. nippon samples. There was no band for adulterants from other similar species such as Alces alces, Rangifer tarandus, Odocoileus virginianus, O. hemionus, Cap-reolus pygargus, Przewalskium albirostis and negative controls. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) method established in this study can quickly and accurately identify Cervi Cornu originated from C. elaphus in crude drugs, standard decoctions, and formula granules, and distinguish the origins of Cervi Cornu products, i.e., C. nippon and similar species. This study can be a reference for other studies on the quality standard of other formula granules of traditional Chinese medicines.

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain fungi. Exposure to mycotoxins may occur through the consumption of contaminated foods or from animals that are fed contaminated feed. To safeguard the nation's food supply, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) utilizes a comprehensive mycotoxin program which samples and analyzes foods for surveillance and compliance purposes, including enforcing action levels. Mycotoxin analysis is at the center of the mycotoxin program, as concentration data are needed for data analysis, scientific assessments, and risk management. This review focuses on the Agency's continuous efforts to develop and incorporate fit-for-purpose analytical tools for mycotoxin analysis with particular focus on the relationship between analytical methodologies and scientific assessments. The discussion further highlights challenges and advancements in analytical methods and discusses future possibilities to develop analytical tools and preventative risk management approaches to meet the evolving regulatory needs.

BACKGROUND: Although PM2.5 (fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm) is an air pollutant of great concern in Texas, limited regulatory monitors pose a significant challenge for decision-making and environmental studies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to predict PM2.5 concentrations at a fine spatial scale on a daily basis by using novel machine learning approaches and incorporating satellite-derived Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and a variety of weather and land use variables. METHODS: We compiled a comprehensive dataset in Texas from 2013 to 2017, including ground-level PM2.5 concentrations from regulatory monitors; AOD values at 1-km resolution based on images retrieved from the MODIS satellite; and weather, land-use, population density, among others. We built predictive models for each year separately to estimate PM2.5 concentrations using two machine learning approaches called gradient boosted trees and random forest. We evaluated the model prediction performance using in-sample and out-of-sample validations. RESULTS: Our predictive models demonstrate excellent in-sample model performance, as indicated by high R2 values generated from the gradient boosting models (0.94-0.97) and random forest models (0.81-0.90). However, the out-of-sample R2 values fall within a range of 0.52-0.75 for gradient boosting models and 0.44-0.69 for random forest models. Model performance varies slightly across years. A generally decreasing trend in predicted PM2.5 concentrations over time is observed in Eastern Texas. IMPACT STATEMENT: We utilized machine learning approaches to predict PM2.5 levels in Texas. Both gradient boosting and random forest models perform well. Gradient boosting models perform slightly better than random forest models. Our models showed excellent in-sample prediction performance (R2 > 0.9).

The stratum corneum of the outermost skin is an important barrier impeding transdermal permeation, and permeation enhancers can reduce the barrier resistance of the stratum corneum and enhance the permeation of drugs in tissues. The optical imaging depth, signal intensity, and scattering coefficient variation rules of skin tissues in time dimension are obtained by using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The effect of optical clearing agents (OCAs) on OCT imaging is obtained by quantitatively analyzing the changes in the optical properties of tissues. D-fructose, one of the monosaccharides, and sucrose, one of the disaccharides, were selected for the ex vivo optical clearing experiments on pig skin tissues utilizing the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) carrier effect. We find that DMSO synergized with sugars applied to skin tissue has a more significant increase in the optical imaging depth and signal intensity, and a reduction in the scattering coefficient with an increasing concentration of DMSO. DMSO with a high concentration and D-fructose with saturated concentration (10:1; v/v) effectively reduce light attenuation in OCT imaging and improve the image quality. This operation will also shorten the application time to minimize skin damage from hyperosmotic agents.

Second harmonic generation plays a vital role in frequency conversion which mutually promotes the laser technology and allows the wavebands extension of new coherent source. The monolithic crystals are supposed to be a superior choice for harmonic generation due to long interaction distance, however, the phase-mismatch brought a sharp reduction in the conversion efficiency. Although birefringent phase-matching and quasi-phase-matching techniques are commonly utilized to fill the phase gap in monolithic crystals, these techniques are limited by the natural refractive index of crystal and the domain engineering, respectively. In recent years, subwavelength structures evolve as a flexible scheme to realize phase matching by engineering the geometry features of crystals. Here, structured nanogratings are designed and fabricated on a monolithic PMN-39PT (Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.39PbTiO3) substrate, a novel ferroelectric crystal with promising optical prospect, for enhancing second harmonic generation, where birefringent or quasi phase-matching is hard to achieve. The nanograting-assisted second harmonic generation enhancement is observed which is not limited by the availability of thin crystalline films. Meanwhile, a boost in the second harmonic signal synchronously promotes the cascading third harmonic generation. This method may provide an alternative solution for enhanced harmonic generation on monolithic substrates and develop potential nonlinear optical materials for frequency conversion.

Aim: This study aims to explore the role of soluble programmed cell death protein 1 (sPD-1) in individuals with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing treatment with drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (D-TACE). Additionally, we aim to assess the potential utility of sPD-1 for determining the optimal timing for combining D-TACE with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Materials and Methods: A total of 44 HCC patients eligible for D-TACE and 55 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Three milliliters of peripheral venous blood from the patients were collected on the day before D-TACE and 3, 7, and 30 days after D-TACE, respectively, for the assay of sPD-1. The relationships between sPD-1 levels, clinical features, outcomes, and the fluctuation of sPD-1 during treatment were analyzed. Results: The initial sPD-1 levels in patients were found to be significantly higher than those in the control group. Although the initial sPD-1 levels displayed a decreasing trend with an increase in BCLC stage, no significant differences were observed among patients at different BCLC stages. The sPD-1 level on day 3 after D-TACE was similar to that on day 7 after D-TACE and significantly lower than the initial level. The sPD-1 level on day 30 after D-TACE was significantly higher than that on day 3 and day 7 after D-TACE and nearly returned to the initial level before D-TACE. Conclusion: The level of sPD-1 was found to be significantly elevated in patients with HCC. However, further research is deemed necessary to fully understand the role of sPD-1 as a potential biomarker in the initiation, progression, and prognosis of HCC. The decrease in sPD-1 following D-TACE suggests that immune effector cells might potentially be reduced, as well as immune function weakened, highlighting the need to avoid the prompt administration of ICIs after D-TACE.

Metastasis is the major cause of cancer-related death, and lymph node is the most common site of metastasis in breast cancer. However, the alterations that happen in tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) to form a premetastatic microenvironment are largely unknown. Here, we first report the dynamic changes in size and immune status of TDLNs before metastasis in breast cancer. With the progression of tumor, the TDLN is first enlarged and immune-activated at early stage that contains specific antitumor immunity against metastasis. The TDLN is then contracted and immunosuppressed at late stage before finally getting metastasized. Mechanistically, B and follicular helper T (Tfh) cells parallelly expand and contract to determine the size of TDLN. The activation status and specific antitumor immunity of CD8+ T cells in the TDLN are determined by interleukin-21 (IL-21) produced by Tfh cells, thus showing parallel changes. The turn from activated enlargement to suppressed contraction is due to the spontaneous contraction of germinal centers mediated by follicular regulatory T cells. On the basis of the B-Tfh-IL-21-CD8+ T cell axis, we prove that targeting the axis could activate TDLNs to resist metastasis. Together, our findings identify the dynamic alterations and regulatory mechanisms of premetastatic TDLNs of breast cancer and provide new strategies to inhibit lymph node metastasis.

The evolution of riverine aquatic ecosystems typically exhibits notable characteristic with cumulative, enduring, and hysteresis. Exploring the non-linear response of riverine ecology to long-term hydrological fluctuations become a major challenge in contemporary interdisciplinary research. In response to the critical issue of frequent river algal blooms in the lower Han River, which is impacted by Asian largest inter-basin water diversion project. We identified the non-linear response of eco-hydrology across various time scales through the integration of Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Inverse Wavelet Transform (IWT). Our study revealed that: 1) Over the past half century, the hydrological regime in the lower Han river showed a significant downward trend, and existed three significant hydrological oscillation periods (HOPs), including the short-scale Intra-AC (180 days), the medium-scale AC (365 days, the first major period), and the long-scale Inter-AC (2500 days), the variation of Inter-AC changed most dramatically. 2) We further found that the Inter-AC variation of hydrology is more closely related to the formation of river algal blooms in the Han River, and when the hydrological Inter-AC shows steady state or downward trend, the frequency of algal blooms in the lower Han River increases significantly. 3) The river algal blooms in the lower Han River is a cumulative consequence to the long-term hydrological influences. Weakened hydrological Inter-AC is more likely to increase the frequency of river algal blooms, and 10-years Inter-AC cumulation increased the frequency by 60%. Therefore, the weaken of long-scale HOP will significantly increase the frequency of river algal blooms in the future. This study received a critical scientific insight and aimed at provide guidance for the optimization of ecological management within the framework of national large-scale water conservation.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on the mixture effect and weights of light physical activity (LPA), moderate physical activity (MPA), and vigorous physical activity (VPA) on dementia risk. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted based on the UK Biobank dataset. We included participants aged at least 45 years old without dementia at baseline between 2006-2010. The weighted quantile sum regression was used to explore the mixture effect and weights of three types of physical activity on dementia risk. RESULTS: This study includes 354,123 participants, with a mean baseline age of 58.0-year-old and 52.4 % of female participants. During a median follow-up time of 12.5 years, 5,136 cases of dementia were observed. The mixture effect of LPA, MPA, and VPA on dementia was statistically significant (ß: -0.0924, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI): (-0.1402, -0.0446), P < 0.001), with VPA (weight: 0.7922) contributing most to a lower dementia risk, followed by MPA (0.1939). For Alzheimer's disease, MPA contributed the most (0.8555); for vascular dementia, VPA contributed the most (0.6271). CONCLUSION: For Alzheimer's disease, MPA was identified as the most influential factor, while VPA stood out as the most impactful for vascular dementia.

BACKGROUND: The course of organ dysfunction (OD) in Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is unknown. Herein, we analyse the temporal patterns of OD in intensive care unit-admitted COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Sequential organ failure assessment scores were evaluated daily within 2 weeks of admission to determine the temporal trajectory of OD using group-based multitrajectory modelling (GBMTM). RESULTS: 392 patients were enrolled with a 28-day mortality rate of 53.6%. GBMTM identified four distinct trajectories. Group 1 (mild OD, n=64), with a median APACHE II score of 13 (IQR 9-21), had an early resolution of OD and a low mortality rate. Group 2 (moderate OD, n=140), with a median APACHE II score of 18 (IQR 13-22), had a 28-day mortality rate of 30.0%. Group 3 (severe OD, n=117), with a median APACHR II score of 20 (IQR 13-27), had a deterioration trend of respiratory dysfunction and a 28-day mortality rate of 69.2%. Group 4 (extremely severe OD, n=71), with a median APACHE II score of 20 (IQR 17-27), had a significant and sustained OD affecting all organ systems and a 28-day mortality rate of 97.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Four distinct trajectories of OD were identified, and respiratory dysfunction trajectory could predict nonpulmonary OD trajectories and patient prognosis.
